genever

Genever is the "grandfather" of gin: our favorite distillate would never have been born if genever or jenever had not been born before in Holland and Belgium, from which the British were inspired for the creation of their national drink. The spirit features an alcoholic base of maltwine blended with grain-based alcohol which makes it close to whiskey, but easier to drink and blend into drinks. In fact, once upon a time, barmen used genever as a base for cocktails that today are based on gin. The botanicals are similar to the classic ones of gin, but juniper is usually present in smaller quantities. It is perfectly suited to drinking straight and is always very popular with gin connoisseurs even for the aged versions.
